Finish Line Podcast Episode 2

Shifting to Eternal Kingdom Building with Cody Hobelmann, Financial Advisor

You may believe generosity matters, yet still find yourself wondering when you will finally have enough margin to give more freely.

What changes when you stop treating generosity as something for later and begin deciding, in advance, what is enough for you and your family?

Meet your guide

Cody Hobelmann is a financial planner at Northwestern Mutual whose early career was shaped by a strong desire to earn, save, invest, and build wealth. After studying economics at the University of Maryland and beginning his career in wealth management at Wilmington Trust, Cody understood the mechanics of managing money well. But as his faith deepened, he began asking a different question: What does faithful financial management look like when everything ultimately belongs to God?

Cody shares how committing to tithe moved generosity from a future aspiration into a present practice, and how that first step gradually challenged his assumptions about wealth, debt, career success, and the pursuit of more. He explores the shift from seeing money as something to accumulate toward seeing himself as a manager of resources entrusted by God, including the decision he and his wife, Steph, made to define a reasonable spending limit before their income increased.

By the end, you may find yourself thinking differently about what “enough” means and how intentional limits can create greater freedom for generosity, obedience, and impact.

  • How tithing can move generosity from intention into practice
  • Why defining enough changes the way you pursue wealth
  • How stewardship reframes money from ownership to faithful management
  • Why financial limits do not always require spending cuts
  • How generosity can reshape your approach to debt and career
  • Why preparing to give helps you recognize opportunities sooner

Mark 12:41-44 | The Widow’s Offering

41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Matthew 6:21-24 | Where Your Treasure Is, Your Heart Is

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
